Class Descriptions

About Shaolin Meditation Sessions

Meditation is a practice that helps calm the mind and gives it time to rest, thereby relieving stress, improving focus and concentration, and improving clarity of thought.

Our STQI Meditation Sessions provide you with a quiet and comfortable environment to practice sitting meditation. While you will be sitting still for a period of time, the technique and skill to achieve no thoughts takes practice and time to achieve.

At the beginning of each session, you have the opportunity to ask questions concerning the technique of sitting meditation. Once the session begins, your guide will help settle into a relaxing posture and you may meditate for up to 45 minutes. Note that for the novice practitioner, even 5 minutes of meditation could be very challenging. For the remaining period you may rest quietly or bring a book to read.

About Moving Meditation (Shaolin Qi Gong / Chi Kung / Qigong) Classes

Moving Meditation is a light exercise involving stretching, breathing techniques, light physical movements, and Qi flow, resulting in increased oxygen intake, blood circulation, and calorie burn through metabolism. It also derives many of the benefits of sitting meditation through its single-minded focus.

Our STQI Moving Meditation classes are fully guided for 50 minutes and you will learn and practice an ancient art known as Shaolin Ba Duan Jin which involves stretching and coordinating abdominal breathing with specific movements to induce qi flow. Shaolin monks have been practicing Moving Meditation for the last fifteen hundred years and it was eventually revealed to the world in the mid 20th century. The techniques can take many years to develop and master although many of the benefits can be realized in weeks or a few months.

About Shaolin Kung Fu Fitness Classes

Shaolin Kung Fu Fitness is a full body workout utilizing the traditional training methods of Shaolin warrior monks. Benefits are many including a strong core, cardio, high calorie burn, flexibility, coordination, power, fitness, and overall health.

Our STQI Kung Fu Fitness classes are fully guided for 50 minutes and is a requirement if you wish to take the Kung Fu Practical class afterwards. There are two streams: 1) Stream L (Light) is recommended for beginners, those with injuries or disabilities, and those with weak knees and ankles, as there are fewer jumping, fast moving, and acrobatic drills; and 2) Stream A (Advanced) is the full Shaolin workout designed for all athletic abilities and ages 14+.

About Shaolin Kung Fu Practical Classes

Shaolin Kung Fu integrates body movement with defending, attacking, and wrestling. Tao Lu, also known as forms, are a series of movements and stances, each with a practical self defence or attacking purpose.

The STQI Kung Fu Practical classes includes non-contact and contact drills to improve coordination, speed, strength, and power, as well as learning and practice of Tao Lu.

Our STQI Kung Fu Practical classes are instructional and students should expect to participate in light to heavy sparring drills. Kung Fu Practical classes always immediately follow a required Kung Fu Fitness class. There are two streams: 1) Stream L (Light) is recommended for beginners, those with injuries or disabilities, weak knees and ankles, and/or where light physical contact is preferred; and 2) Stream A (Advanced) is recommended for those who wish to physically challenge themselves and is designed for all athletic abilities and ages 14+.
