Claudia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) more than 10 years ago. She describes her ordeal, “During those 10 years, I have experienced many symptoms like tingling, leg stiffness, and pain in limbs on a regular basis. I also had what they call irritable bowel syndrome which gave me diarrhea for a whole year and I felt terribly sick most of the time. I had no appetite and I lost a lot of weight.” But today Claudia is completely free of her symptoms! She explains, “I am proud to say that I am symptom free now and I can eat whatever I want providing of course, I still eat healthy most of the time which is, I believe what everybody should do anyway.” “What did I do to become symptom free of MS?” she asks. “Well the first step to is to take responsibility for your own health and believe that your disease CAN be cured. While my success to recovery can be attributed to many things, I can tell you that Shaolin Qi Gong has been a tremendous help.” Claudia then explains further that, “I have been doing Shaolin Qi Gong on a regular basis for about 5 months and since then my symptoms have completely disappeared for the first time in 10 years. I feel more energetic and alive. The deep breathing exercises of Shaolin Qi Gong have already done wonders on me so I can only imagine how I will feel in another year! I feel like I’m a new person.” Instructor Dao at the STQI Toronto school in downtown area offers some insight, “One of the key principles behind Shaolin Qi Gong is to improve oxygen intake and blood circulation, and thereby allow all the cells in your body to operate at peak levels. Without oxygen, your cells cannot synthesize with carbohydrates and fats, and therefore would not be able to extract the energy they need to perform its individual functions. By practicing Shaolin Qi Gong, you would give your body its best chance to heal on a daily basis.” Claudia concludes, “I highly recommend you try Shaolin Qi Gong if you suffer from MS or any other so called ‘disease’ that makes you think you are doomed to a life of suffering. Do NOT believe that and give Qi Gong a try!” Finally we ask Instructor Dao his opinion on Shaolin Qi Gong as a cure for multiple sclerosis. He comments, “I cannot guarantee that Shaolin Qi Gong will cure multiple sclerosis, and furthermore it would be difficult and expensive to prove in a scientific research project because so there are many other factors in play, such as the overall health of the person, the person’s ability to learn, and the person’s persistence in daily practice and practicing correctly. What I can tell you though, is that Shaolin Qi Gong is a gentle exercise that anyone can do, even lying in bed or sitting in a chair if necessary.
On Saturday, January 14th, we hosted a free day of trial classes for Shaolin Meditation, Shaolin Ba Duan Jin Qi Gong / Chi Kung, as well as Shaolin Kung Fu Fitness. The classes were conducted in English by Instructor Dao and closely reflects the actual beginner classes. The turnout was great with 30 people in attendance. While our classes normally have a capacity of 10-15 students, we somehow managed to fit all 30 students at once on the floor! We are very grateful for the new mats which made it not only comfortable to sit on, but also safer to practice on. Thank you to everyone that showed up and participated. We hope you thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we look forward to hosting another day of free trial classes in April.

For many of us, health and exercise is a hot item on our New Year’s resolution list. We tell ourselves, “I’m going to hit the gym!” but either A) Never do it or B) Join a gym and workout for a couple months and then lose the motivation. Why is this? Let’s face it, exercising at the gym is not particularly exciting, motivating, or challenging. Whether you’re on the treadmill or pumping iron, monotony settles in pretty quickly. And then there’s the Shaolin workout. Over the past 1500 years, Shaolin kung fu masters have created a holistic workout regimen as part of their kung fu martial arts training. It involves increasing flexibility, improving cardio, building strong core muscles, coordinating your mind, body and limbs, developing speed, and generating power. With this Shaolin workout all of your muscles will be tested. Tremendous energy is expended and therefore this workout is a very effective and challenging way to burn calories and lose weight. It helps you to build your muscles proportionately and you will feel more athletic, coordinated, and stronger. Most importantly you will feel much healthier. The Shaolin workout consists of various (and unique) exercises and drills and requires no weights (although you can further challenge yourself by adding light weights to your hands and/or feet). Some of these may be familiar such as the duck walk, push ups, and sit ups, although that is barely scratching the surface of the workout routines, of which many are not easy to describe. Perhaps it can be described as drills that they use your arms, legs, and body in ways you would not normally envision! By using your own body weight, you develop your muscles naturally and they do not become out of balance or disproportional. If you’re concerned that you are out of shape or this sounds too intense for you then do not worry as you are in control of the intensity you want. The Shaolin Temple Quanfa Institute (S.T.Q.I.) under the guidance of Master Shi Guo Song, a Shaolin Warrior Monk originating from China’s famous Shaolin Temple in Song Shan, adapts the workout to men and women of all ages and for any fitness level and athletic ability. As you get stronger, you will find yourself expending even more energy with greater speed and power. Under the careful guidance of a Shaolin master or trained instructor, this workout can be carried out in a class with mixed abilities. And with the stronger students supporting others, it becomes a great motivating experience where one can improve quickly. You may be wondering if this is really traditional Shaolin training, and the answer is yes it is. The workout is designed to build a strong foundation which is the most important development for anyone wanting to learn traditional Shaolin Kung Fu. In fact, if you wish to learn traditional Shaolin Kung Fu then this is a mandatory class that precedes practical Shaolin kung fu training.
