Sheng-Xi Zhou

step_9

Master Sheng-Xi Zhou was born in 1923 in the city of Yi-Xing, Jiangsu Province of China, a place internationally known for its pottery products, especially the purple sand teapots. His birthplace seems to have set the tone for his later success as a unique purple sand pottery artist and craftsman.
Originally a biologist, Zhou resided in Shanghai for the major part of his life. Ever since his university days, he has developed a keen interest in horticulture. He is well known in Shanghai for his unique contribution to the growing and multiplication of Chinese roses. His interest in horticulture later expanded to include bonsai. His in-depth knowledge of purple sand pots seemed a natural outcome of his love for bonsai art. As Zhou just started dabbling in the field of purple sand pottery, he was luckily introduced to Master Jing Zhou Gu, a renowned craft master of purple sand pottery. The two of them soon developed a deep and enduring friendship. In the early 80’s, Zhou had the opportunity to be tutored by Gu who came from Yi-Xing to Shanghai for a relatively lengthy stay. During that period, the two spent a great deal of time together, exploring their common interest, Zhou’s artistry in purple sand pottery was greatly sharpened under the guidance of Gu whom he took not only as a mentor but also as a personal friend.
Although Zhou did not receive formal training in pottery art, he has devoted, over the past thirty years, far more time to the field than an average professional. Focusing more on quality than quantity, his pottery creations are full of inspiration and surprises. As a result, his works have found their way into the collections of well know connoisseurs in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and North America. A man in his seventies, Zhou is not quite as productive now as when younger. However, he finds expression of great joy in his creative work. Zhou hopes that his works of art would mark the world in his lifetime, just like the inscription on one of his seals suggests.
